Dolphin Report - August, 2008
August dolphin swims were very good with the exception of cold water, however, the water visibility was the best we have ever seen at this time of year (approx. 10 metre visibility).
There were lots of dolphins around the local squid grounds so that is a good sign, however, the professional squiders are already working the area.
This time of year we usually see lots of fur seals but we are only recording a couple of seals per trip and no sea lion sightings. Penguin sightings are also down
with only a few spotted throughout August.
Mo Hawk’s new baby from March ’08 has just been named “Trent” he (or she) is a fat baby at the moment and is already a keen player giving the swimmers a good experience.
Mo Hawk is definitely a very special dolphin and a big part of our success.
September is looking to be a good month with lots of local dolphins in close to shore.
Dolphin Report - May, 2008
Dolphins are still close to Glenelg, but started to head out into deeper water in the later part of the month.
Mohawk and her newborn have been putting on a great show for our swimmers, playing around the lines.
The local pods from down South have been playing close to Glenelg also but slowly moving into deeper water.
Cruises will start back up in August
Dolphin Report - April, 2008
There have been a lot of dolphins close to Glenelg, although mainly feeding. The beginning of April saw unfamiliar bottlenose pods around Glenelg with five newborn's.
Mohawk has been coming over with her newborn for long periods of interaction with the swimmers.
Dolphin Report - March, 2008
Early March started off excellent, with a lot of Common Dolphins in the deeper water. Second week of March the Common Dolphins moved off allowing the bait fish and sea birds to move closer to the shore. This brought many Bottlenose Dolphins close to shore but only for feeding, meaning interaction time was down.
The Sealions have come back into the area after a few weeks away and reports that the Sealion that has been tagged is Henry is in fact a Sealion called Sessel. Unfortunately I believe that they call every Sealion around Glenelg Henry.
Mowawk has had another baby and there is two more
newborn Bottlenose babies around close to Glenelg.
Most of March had swimmers in the water within
10 minutes of leaving Holdfast Shores Marina.
Dolphin Report - February, 2008
Another good month for dolphin numbers, although not many local pods around. There have been many common dolphins around with new born’s but we are yet to see any new born bottlenose dolphins. This may be a result of the bottlenose dolphins going elsewhere to give birth due to the amount of dolphin harassment from other boats in our waters.
There have been a number of dolphins this month with major propeller cuts- it is extremely sad not to see them in their pods the following day. There have also been a lot of Sealions around, one has now been fitted with a tracking device and unfortunately after this we have not seen any sealions.
Dolphin Report - January, 2008
All in all a good month for dolphin sightings. There have been many bottlenose and common dolphins around although the interaction time has dropped off due to the boat traffic. A change to how the dolphins of Adelaide are protected with a new ruling has put South Australia behind most third world countries in the way that we respect our dolphins – It is extremely disappointing.
